A Summer with Grandma
Riya had come to spend summer vacation at her grandmother's house and she was her favorite grandchild. Grandmother preferred to do everything herself and Riya was surprised to see her. Presently, despite grandmother's age, she worked in the garden regularly and occasionally tried new recipes in the kitchen. On the first day, grandmother showed Riya her old photograph album and in reflection of the past, both of them became emotional. Grandmother said that one has to make many sacrifices in life, but the sacrifices made for family are the most meaningful. Listening to grandmother's words, Riya began to contemplate what was important in her own life. Grandmother taught her that no relationship survives without tolerance and patience. They engaged themselves in a project - renovating a part of the old house. Undertaking this project, Riya realized how important hard work and dedication are. Regardless of age, grandmother participated in all work and her enthusiasm was contagious. Grandmother's impression on Riya was very positive and she saw her grandmother as a role model. Therefore, she decided that she would be strong and independent like her grandmother. Grandmother involved her in different activities that would stimulate her mind. Riya realized that these sentiments need to be expressed not just in words, but in actions. They spent the remaining days of vacation together and every moment was precious. Grandmother said that we can always improve ourselves, age is no barrier. At the end of vacation, Riya felt that she hadn't just come to visit, but had learned important life lessons. Her excitement was that she would come to grandmother's place again next year and spend more time.
