The Monk Who Climbed the Peak
Robin was a monk. He lived in a holy temple. Every day at noon he would pray.
One day his teacher said, "If you want pure wisdom, you must go to the mountain peak. There is a holy shrine there."
"But it's very far," Robin said. "And the journey is long."
"Will you quit so easily?" the teacher asked. "You must cope with difficulties. As a monk, you rely on faith."
So Robin started his journey. On the first day, the sun rose beautifully. But the path was long. At night his mood was down. "Am I a fool to attempt this?" he wondered.
On the second day, thick fog came. He could barely see. "I must halt," he thought. "I can't see."
But then he remembered - a monk doesn't see only with eyes. He prayed: "I rely on my faith."
On the third day, his energy faded. His face was pale from exhaustion. "Maybe it's just a myth," he thought. "Maybe the shrine doesn't exist."
"Should I quit?" he said aloud.
Suddenly an old monk appeared. "Why would you quit when you've come so far?"
"I'm tired," Robin admitted. "My mood is low. My strength is fading. I feel like a fool."
The old monk smiled. "The peak is not about strength. It's about coping with weakness. A holy man is not one whose mood is always good. A pure heart is not one that never struggles. Real wisdom is learning to rely not just on yourself, but on something greater."
"But the fog is so thick," Robin protested.
"Fog will fade," the old monk said. "Myth says only fools climb. But truth says only the brave reach the peak. You must not halt. You must not quit."
Robin took a deep breath. His mood shifted. Some color returned to his pale face.
"I will cope," he said with determination. "I will rely on my training. I will pray."
On the fourth day when noon came, the fog faded away. And there, not too far, was the peak!
Robin climbed. Step by step. When his mood went down, he prayed. When he felt like a fool, he remembered his purpose. When he wanted to halt, he thought of his teacher's words.
Finally, he reached the peak. The holy shrine stood there - simple, mild, pure.
"I relied on you," Robin whispered, praying. "I didn't quit. I learned to cope."
When he descended, people asked, "What did you find at the peak?"
"I found," Robin said, "that the journey itself was the lesson. The fog taught me patience. The long path taught me endurance. My pale face and tired mood taught me humility. Wanting to quit taught me determination. Feeling like a fool taught me courage."
"Was the shrine holy?" someone asked.
"The shrine was pure," Robin answered. "But not because it was on a peak. Because I learned to cope, to rely not just on myself. I learned that real monks are not those who never struggle, but those who never quit struggling."
"And the myth?" another asked. "Was it true?"
"Every myth has truth," Robin smiled. "People say only fools climb impossible peaks. But I learned - sometimes being a fool who tries is better than being wise and halting. Sometimes a mild heart that keeps going is stronger than a fierce one that quits. Sometimes praying in fog when your mood is low and your face is pale - that's when you're most holy, most pure."
Years later, Robin became a teacher himself. When students would say, "I want to quit," he would say:
"The peak will seem far. The path will be long. Fog will make you blind. Your mood will drop. You'll feel pale and weak. You'll think you're a fool. You'll want to halt, to quit. But remember - holy wisdom comes not from never struggling, but from learning to cope. Pure strength comes not from never fading, but from relying on something greater. And the greatest myth is that only perfect people reach the peak. Truth is - everyone reaches it who never quits, who prays in the fog, who keeps going even when noon turns to night, even when every step feels foolish. Because in the end, the peak is not a place. It's a person who learned to cope, to rely, to never halt, to never quit - a monk not just in name, but in mood, in spirit, in pure, holy, mild determination."
