Night Workshop in the Hills
In a hill village near Jhenaidah, an evening workshop took place inside a wooden cabin. Nila brought a toolkit to fix the solar light's cable. Their first task was to lock hands into a safety chain so no one would slip on the mountain path. At dusk they listed the area's problems on a large chart about river pollution. Everyone let out a cheer for each new idea, and the enthusiasm rippled outward. Joy quickly opened the first-aid chest and pulled out bandages. Team chief Mitu reminded everyone how cold the hills become at night. Grandma served slices of cake cut into a hearty chunk for each person. The sky was completely clear, so they passed time counting the stars. Late at night Konok wrote poems about the beauty of mist clinging to the leaves. As the night deepened, they formed a close circle around the fire to trade stories. Mitu placed handmade flower crowns on each head while taking photos. Little Rina crawled up a rock while playing. Overexcited Rahat crept forward and almost slipped. At dawn they fetched fresh milk from the nearby dairy farm for morning tea. Mist along the river slowly drifted away into the distance. Mitu said, 'We don't want anyone to drown out here, so follow the rules.' They kept Jakir, the night guard who had looked a bit drunk at yesterday's fair, awake with tea. During a break, Ashik rested his tired elbow on the table. Mitu said, 'We are not the environment's enemy; we are its mindful friends.'
