Night Shift Street Sweep
Rain had left thick mud all over the old city street. As the night shift began, the cleaning workers heard their whistles. Heavy trucks lined up, and everyone slipped on a mask. Tanvi said, “Tonight we’ll collect as much as we can.” Rubel pushed a wooden cart piled with broken bricks, while a metal wagon filled with plastic litter. Jharnа tied a sturdy rope around her waist and climbed into the canal. Debris from the last flood still clogged the drain. Samira moved carefully to sweep without stirring extra dust. Mozahar warned, “Keep the load light or it’ll be hard to lift.” Beside the big truck, a small dump bin swallowed each bag. Headlights reflected off raincoats and masks as the crew worked deep into the night. Before leaving, Tanvi walked the entire street again to ensure no stray litter remained. Holding the same rope, everyone formed a chain to pass buckets of muck. “By morning people will think magic happened,” Jasim laughed.
