মিঠা পানির মাছ উৎপাদনে এবং ইলিশ রক্ষায় সফলতা থাকলেও বঙ্গোপসাগরে marine মাছের abundance কমছে এবং কিছু কিছু aquatic species অনেকটা extinct হতে চলেছে বলে caution করছেন researchers। Unregulated exploitation এবং indiscriminate harvesting বন্ধ না হলে ভবিষ্যতে Bay of Bengal মৎস্য শূন্য হয়ে যেতে পারে বলেও apprehension করা হচ্ছে। Marine fisheries research এবং survey-এর মাধ্যমে এই evaluation করছেন scientists।

বাংলাদেশের সাগরে মাছের stock-এর কোনো accurate estimation নেই এবং কতটা sustainable fishing করা যাবে তারও limitation নির্ধারিত নেই। কারণ extensive survey এবং investigation দীর্ঘদিন স্থগিত ছিল। ২০১৬ সালে নতুন vessel আর. ভি মীন সন্ধানী procurement করার পর থেকে assessment পুনরায় শুরু হয়েছে।

সমুদ্রের ১০-২০০ মিটার depth পর্যন্ত continental shelf এলাকায় এই survey পরিচালিত হয়।

গত তিন বছরের তথ্য-উপাত্ত analysis করে সামুদ্রিক মাছ নিয়ে একটি রিপোর্ট সরকারের higher authorities-এর কাছে পাঠানো হয়েছে। Fisheries Directorate-এর Marine Fisheries Survey Management Unit-এর প্রধান বৈজ্ঞানিক কর্মকর্তা মো. শরিফ উদ্দীন বলেন, "২০০০ সালের পর থেকে আমাদের vessel-based গবেষণা পুরোপুরি বন্ধ ছিল। Bangladesh Marine Fisheries Capacity Building project এর মাধ্যমে এটি পুনরায় initiated হয়েছে।"
