世界環境デー:グローバルなenvironmental awarenessと運動の歴史
6月5日は世界中でWorld Environment Dayとして祝われています。1974年以来、この日はglobal environmental awarenessを高める上で重要な役割を果たしてきました。最初のWorld Environment Dayのthemeは「Only One Earth」であり、今日でもrelevantです。しかし、environmental movementの歴史はそれよりもずっと以前に始まりました。
環境運動の起源
最初のenvironmental movementは、19世紀のイギリスのIndustrial Revolutionの時期に始まりました。工場からのair pollutionが都市の人々のhealthに影響を与え、urban middle-classが運動に参加しました。その結果、1863年にAlkali Actが制定され、environmental lawが始まりました。
世界初のConservation Movementはインドで始まりました。この運動はアメリカやglobal stageにも広がりました。1892年、ジョン・ミュアはSierra Clubを設立し、government attentionをwildlife conservationやnatural resources protectionに向けることを目的としました。
環境運動は法律に限らず、public awarenessを高める上でも重要な役割を果たしています。Climate change、deforestation、そしてbiodiversity lossのような主要なglobal issuesは、今日の環境運動の中心にあります。
