The Great Wall of China
万里の長城（Great Wall of China） は、石と土で作られた長い structure です。紀元前5世紀から紀元16世紀にかけて、中国の北の boundary を守るために建設・維持されました。多くの fortifications が建てられましたが、紀元前220年から紀元前200年の間に中国初代皇帝・始皇帝によって建てられた barrier が最も有名です。それは現在の壁のかなり北に位置し、わずかな remnants しか残っていません。現在の壁は明王朝時代に建てられました。
万里の長城 は人類の手によって作られた世界最大の architecture です。高さは約5〜8メートル、全長は8851.8キロメートルあります。上海の近くから始まり、ロプノールという場所で終わります。
主な部分の建設は紀元前208年頃に始まりました。建設作業は秦帝国時代の中国人によって開始されました。中国初代皇帝・秦始皇はこれを最初に使用し、敵から自分の territory を守るために延長しました。中国の自然の barriers に加え、他の地域を守るためにも使われ、北方の匈奴族に対する最初の defense 線となりました。
漢、隋、北朝、金などの歴史の中でも、同じ理由で長城の modification、expansion、reconstruction が行われたことが記されています。
