Lantern Songs Beside the Padma

In the evening breeze by the Padma ghat, a group of friends gathered. Everyone wore a happy grin because they were launching their first riverside folk fair. Rima pulled out honey-glazed rice cakes from her bag and shared them. Shawon switched on his old radio and let their favorite folk tunes play. Hearing the music, villagers from next door formed a small rally and joined the fair. Rima lit clay lamps to raise everyone's spirits. They lovingly invited the Padma as the Padma river, as if the waves were part of the crew. One of them brought a dhol so a spontaneous dance could begin. Rayhan mimicked his grand grandfather's voice to recite an old poem. Shahin said the gathering would bring new glory to the village. Fatema blended fresh grape juice for the kids. Now and then they sat back to relax on the chairs. An elder from the neighboring village said a new rumor about the fair was already circulating in town. Still, everyone sat in a circle, keeping the round table chatter alive. There was a special spread for the first-time guests on woven mats. Madhabi held a paper lantern that spread a gentle light. Sohel grinned and asked, 'Hit the drum a little louder.' The sound from the speakers reached all the way to the distant bamboo grove. Father reminded them to keep a guard on duty through the night for safety. When they finally headed home, they exchanged a warm smile.
