Pour la première fois, les chercheurs japonais ont lancé un satellite en bois appelé 'LignoSat' en orbite. Cet appareil innovant, lancé le 5 novembre 2024, est entièrement fabriqué en bois, spécifiquement en bois de honoki, traditionnellement utilisé pour fabriquer des épées. LignoSat est positionné en trajectoire à environ 400 kilomètres au-dessus de la Terre. Son principal objectif est de tester la résilience et la durabilité du bois dans l'espace.

Une caractéristique spéciale de cet appareil en bois est qu'il brûle complètement lors de sa rentrée dans l'atmosphère, sans laisser de résidus ou de polluants nocifs. Cela aide à réduire la contamination de l'espace et les débris.
