Erstmals haben Forscher aus Japan einen Holzsatelliten namens 'LignoSat' in die Umlaufbahn gebracht. Dieses innovative Gerät, das am 5. November 2024 gestartet wurde, besteht vollständig aus Holz, speziell aus Honoki-Holz, das traditionell zur Herstellung von Schwertern verwendet wird. LignoSat befindet sich auf einer Bahn in etwa 400 Kilometern Höhe über der Erde. Sein Haupt-ziel ist es, die Resilienz und Haltbarkeit von Holz im Weltraum zu testen.

Ein besonderes Merkmal dieses Holzgeräts ist, dass es beim Wiedereintritt in die Atmosphäre vollständig verbrennt und keine schädlichen Rückstände oder Verunreinigungen hinterlässt. Dies hilft, die Kontamination des Weltraums und den Abfall zu reduzieren.
